Music

Music at Ivegill begins with singing. As a school, we have a weekly singing assembly where we sing both traditional and modern songs. Singing transfers into the classroom to assist with learning in many subjects from maths, phonics and science.

We employ a specialist music teacher who works across the school from Reception –Year 6. The emphasis is on enjoying music. We perform for the parents and wider community on a regular basis and the children relish an opportunity to be part of a play where we combine drama and musical theatre.

In EYFS/KS1 the children are introduced to a number of instruments, both percussion and tuned, and through exploration, they devise and rehearse their own compositions. They are introduced to many musical terms and there is a focus on rhythm and being able to perform as part of a group.

In KS2 the children investigate timbre, tempo and different rhythms again. As they progress through KS2 they are introduced to many different styles of music and instruments from gospel, blues and jazz.

We enjoy the support of the Cumbria Music Service who provide a peripatetic woodwind teacher. Lessons can be accessed by pupils from Year 3.
