Welcome to Years 1/2

Year 1

In the morning we are taught by Miss Collins and we learn alongside Reception. In the afternoon we join Year 2 for our learning where we are taught by Mrs Harmse on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday and Mrs Ferguson on a Wednesday, Thursday and Friday. Our Teaching Assistants are Mrs Cranson, Miss Pickthall and Miss Bulfield.

A typical day in our class consists of Phonics, English and Maths in the morning and then our afternoons are filled with the wider curriculum where we learn about our local environment, Art, DT, Music, PSHE, RE, Music, History and Geography.

For phonics we follow Little Wandle Letters and Sounds. Your child will be sent home with reading books linked to their phonics phase. It is really important that children read at home with an adult at least 3 times per week.

Year 2

Mrs Harmse and Mrs Ferguson teach us every morning when we learn more about phonics and spelling, reading, writing and maths. In the afternoons the year 1 children join us for their learning.

Our afternoons are filled with the wider curriculum where we learn about Science, Art, DT, Music, PSHE, RE, Music, History and Geography. We enjoy learning challenge questions where we apply what we have learned.

Years 1/2

You will have seen our knowledge organisers which show parents what we are studying this half term. The Knowledge Organisers tell you key facts and important vocabulary which the children will learn over the next few months. It would be wonderful if you could spend time looking at them together at home and discussing what the children are learning in school.

This term we will be studying:

Science: animals including humans. The focus will be on matching offspring/ babies to adults, basic needs of humans: exercise, food, hygiene.

Geography: mapping and fieldwork skills including drawing simple maps.

History: Events beyond living memory – The Great Fire of London

DT: structures: How can you stop a tower from toppling over?

Art: Painting, primary colours and looking at the work of Mondrian.

Literacy: our theme is Pirates. We will be using different stories to explore: setting, characters, plot to inspire our writing creating maps, pirate characters then writing our own pirate adventure stories.

In Maths we are working on place value and building our number knowledge through Mastering Number.

Please can we ask that reading books and reading records are brought into school every day. We check to see if your child has read with you three times over a week so please fill in the parent’s comments section of the Reading Record Book.
