Welcome to Years 1/2

Year 1

In the morning we are taught by Miss Collins and we learn alongside Reception. In the afternoon we join Year 2 for our learning where we are taught by Mrs Harmse on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday and Mrs Ferguson on a Wednesday, Thursday and Friday. Our Teaching Assistants are Mrs Cranson and Miss Brown.

A typical day in our class consists of Phonics, English and Maths in the morning and then our afternoons are filled with the wider curriculum where we learn about our local environment, Art, DT, Music, PSHE, RE, Music, History and Geography.

For phonics we follow Little Wandle Letters and Sounds. Your child will be sent home with reading books linked to their phonics phase. It is really important that children read at home with an adult at least 3 times per week.

Year 2

Mrs Harmse and Mrs Ferguson teach us every morning when we learn more about phonics, reading, writing and maths. In the afternoons the year 1 children join us for their learning.

Our afternoons are filled with the wider curriculum where we learn about our local environment, Art, DT, Music, PSHE, RE, Music, History and Geography. We enjoy learning challenge questions where we apply what we have learned.

Years 1/2

You will have seen our knowledge organisers which show parents what we are studying this half term. The Knowledge Organisers tell you key facts and important vocabulary which the children will learn over the next few months. It would be wonderful if you could spend time looking at them together at home and discussing what the children are learning in school.

This half term we will be studying:

In Science our focus is on animals including humans: basic needs for survival and what is needed for humans to be healthy.

In Geography we will be comparing London and Nairobi looking at both of these capital cities and what is the same and different about them.

In History we will be learning about the Great fire of London.

In DT we are looking at structures and how to make paper stronger by folding in different ways leading to a building challenge.

In Art we will be studying the work of Piet Mondrian and exploring printmaking.

In Literacy our theme is Pirates. We will be exploring different elements of stories: setting, characters, plot to inspire our writing.

In Maths we are working on place value and building our number knowledge through Mastering Number.

Please can we ask that reading books and reading records are brought into school every day. We check to see if your child has read with you three times over a week so please fill in the parent’s comments section of the Reading Record Book.
